Project UK Annual Report

This report summarises the activities of Project UK, following the 2022-23 annual review of each Fisheries Improvement Project (FIP). Progress has been made through the hard work, collaboration and dedication of over 120 participants across the FIP Steering Groups.

Annual Report 2022-2023

Through six Fishery Improvement Projects, representing 12 fisheries, Project UK is addressing 61 individual improvement actions, each consisting of multiple milestones across a pre-agreed timeframe. These fisheries all bring commercial, economic, and cultural benefits to UK communities and are an important part of the UK’s fishing heritage and marine environment.

This year, overall progress was seen across the different FIPs, and several key milestones were reached. Compared to 2021-22, fewer score changes were seen this year, following many larger milestones being reached in the previous review period. The wider challenges facing the fishing industry remain, particularly related to the UK’s exit from the EU and the current costof-living crisis in the UK, making environmental improvements just one of many priorities facing Project UK Steering Group representatives, as well as the wider sector. Post-Brexit legislative change means all six FIPs are awaiting one or more government processes to conclude in order for score improvements to be seen in specific performance indicators (PIs).

Annual Report 2021-2022

During this time period, Steering Groups came together to overcome several challenges facing the UK fishing industry. In addition to the impact of EU Exit on UK fisheries and the global Covid pandemic, UK fisheries were faced with the impacts of war in Ukraine, the fuel crisis, and an increased focus on social welfare issues within fishing.

Annual Report 2020-2021

Despite significant challenges, between 2020-21 substantial progress was still possible within the FIPs, with 19 performance indicator (PI) scores improving over the year. The Project UK Secretariat worked closely with all FIP Steering Groups to ensure progress continues throughout the remaining timeline of the FIPs.

Annual Report 2019-2020

Project UK has scaled up considerably since its inception, growing from the original six FIPs to the current eight, representing 12 fisheries across the UK. These fisheries all bring commercial, economic, and cultural benefits to UK communities.
